Their father, Ron Beirnes, was skipper of the Altair and disappeared in the Bering Sea along with their uncle, George Nations, a cousin, and other boys they knew. This occurred on Valentine's Day in 1983. In January of 1987, their brother, Tony, disappeared on an 11 foot skiff. The sisters dealt with their grief by creating bunnies.
